Step IV (Optional): Click on the Journal Article template. This is the one in the centre, and this is the one in which we will be working in this assignment. This will open a document with three panes as follows:

Step V: Work on the template I have provided you by clicking on the link. You will see that it has three panes, from left to right these are:

  1. File space
  2. Editing Area
  3. View Space where you can see a rendered document

You will be working in the file space and the middle pane where you will be editing most of the time. For now, in the right hand panel, set the button to ‘Manual’. In the middle panel, set the button to ‘Rich Text Format’.

You are all set to start writing your documents. In the next section, I am going to write about structuring your document with three elements:

  1. Writing in plain text and in paragraphs, adding lists
  2. Adding tables
  3. Adding references and citations
  4. Adding Figures

These are all done using LaTeX, a typesetting language but you will not need to know the details. Just follow this tutorial for now, to get familiar with the writing part of it.

In Part II of the series, I shall write about writing and adding these elements.
