Do I like the word “শালা”? Of course, a very interesting and appropriate expression of despair, that you cannot really express in any other way. Certainly no English word comes to mind that can capture and express what shaala can.

As I wrote before, the beauty of this memoir is how the common Bengali expressions are warped and weft in the English text. There is a flow in this memoir that blends expressions in Bengali and contemporary English I have not read in other English novels from India/Indian subcontinent. Most of them tend to be somewhat contrived but this work is flowing straight out of heart. Love it!
