Great advice on reading but tread carefully

‘Tis the season to collect booklists and go through planning your reading for the year. Therefore this article from Darius would go a long way to help you to plan your reading. Note his first and last pieces of advice in the column – follow these. You need to retain the core points and arguments you read and you need to collect books in the first place. But with some of his other advices such as read multiple books at the same time, read books while eating <multitasking> – I am not sure will contribute to the retention that he writes about. You need to spend quality time with the text you read. You will retain and use information from a piece of writing if you “read when you read”, rather than do something else. Also, if you really want to read widely, reading only relevant items runs counter to what he writes. May have worked for him but there is no surety it will work for you. Won’t work for me.
