I really like how you insightfully differentiate between “water cooler” gathering from “community”. Facebook may have a warped notion of community as you claim, but others have attempted to build “communities” in the sense of interest networks. Google plus, for instance, is an interest network and online community at heart. “Neighbourly”, is a digital community built around geolocation.
