Mastodon is NOT a protocol, ActivityPub is. Had you have tried other, less buggy, and less stretched apps such as pleroma and so on, you might have had a different experience. Looks like you hit a bad “air pocket” equivalent of traversing Mastodon. I’d avoid their native app and stick with a web browser.
