Refraining from meat consumption as the first precept is perhaps your interpretation. Indeed, many people do that, and in a larger sense, a very honourable interpretation. Many Mahayanis and Theravadins do. IIRC, The Buddha’s advice was not to consume meat specifically killed for you (so hunting and fishing and consumption of game meat is out, but mass produced meat is nothing you can do about).
