The way is catch yourself in the moment is to root yourself in conscious breathing to get out of the fantasy mode, or whenever you find yourself overwhelmed. The first step is to recognise the rising emotion or feeling and come back to the present moment. In essence, the goal is to first control yourself rather than others or the externally mediated situation.
