What exactly is our vaccine pass doing for us in New Zealand?

If you got yourself double vaccinated and the government issued you a vaccine pass, you will need to show it to a vendor to receive services. The pass has a QR code that, when scanned, shows your name and date of birth, and whether your pass is verified presumably by the Government. Yet the procedures around that process is quite complex and unconnected from the more important task of your leaving a footprint that you were present there at a certain time, and that process is separated from the vaccine pass.
