[Apologies to those who follow my blog and who do not speak/read/ Bengali language. Inagist, in this essay, I have critiqued an essay written by a fellow scholar whom I have known for several decades and who was my medical college classmate. India is going through a phase of post-truth and distortion of history by the ruling party and their leaders. There is a need to hold up the candle of truth to people. The title of my review is roughly translated as “The historical perspective of truth”. The original author has contented that religious fighting among the Hindus and Muslims as far as the common people were concerned were not regular before 1820s and has shown with evidence from historians that such narrative got built over time in colonial India. The impression that the ruling BJP party supporters of India want to project about Rabindranath Tagore, as if he was “anti-Muslim” in his views, is contested by Jayanta Bhattacharya who has contextualised the several quotes. I add to this a couple of things: one, that the Hindu fundamentalism and persecution is nothing new or novel, Hindus had one time all but annihilated the Buddhists from the homeland of Buddhhism, i.e., Indian (sub)continent. But that is an elephant in the room. Beyond that, it is not inevitable that people are stupefied. One can still bring about a change so that instead of blindly believing everything projected by the media, people need to learn to question.]
